To let you know why I think you might want to read this book, let me sum up what I learned from it, and how its lessons have affected me over the last few weeks.First, a little background: Without getting into detail, I've struggled with getting happiness in my life for a large number of years. I chased the things that I thought would make me happy, to include money, material items, business success, romantic companionships, and even short but repeated dives into spiritual exploration. None of what I found seemed to deliver the happiness I was looking for. (Early in this book the author tells a similar story. I connected with that.)
Upon reading this book, however, it's like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders (or more accurately my mind), and I can say (for the last few weeks at least) I feel a great deal more happiness about life than I ever have before.
So why did this book affect me so greatly? I think the magic of this book (over all the others I've read) is connected with the fact it showed me how my own mind worked. That's something no other book has ever done for me. It explained why my mind does what it does, using science and funny/interesting stories to do so, and it explained how my mind creates the things that steal my happiness. Then it proceeded to tell me how I can tweak some things in my mind to get my mind to create more happiness for me. Early in the book, the author used a great Captain Obvious mechanism to tell me that my happiness always comes from within my own mind (when it comes), and that all the stuff that inhibits my happiness comes from within my own mind also. I never thought about it like that. And after I read about how it all worked, everything about my personal happiness potential became so clear.
From there, after being presented the details of how this works in my own mind, like he was looking into my head in real time and telling me how it all worked as I saw it working, I started seeing my mind in a way that indeed put me into the control room of my mind (explained in the book) just like the author promised, and I was able to start to take control of my mind like I have never experienced before.
There's a bit of science that explains why the brain is actually wired to help you get into this same space. I can't really explain it as well as the author, but I will testify that it works, or has for the last few weeks, and seems to be getting stronger as I go along.
Here are the changes I've experienced in the last few weeks: Stuff at work doesn't bug me anymore. Stuff at home doesn't bug me anymore. Things online and in the news don't bother me anymore. My relationship with my wife has sparked (in multiple ways), and my teenagers are much easier to deal with (I can now see into their minds too which is helping me understand them). I think I'm generally more pleasurable to be around, because people are asking me what I've changed and where my new sense of humor is coming from. (I've always had it. I guess I just never felt like sharing openly.) I've even dumped 5 pounds because maybe I'm not stress eating as much? I attribute all of these changes to the fact I can now see my mind working and understand why it was trying to create all that negative noise for me. I never knew understanding my own mind could change my life this much. If this lasts, I will be forever grateful.
If you're on the fence, you should read this book. Over the last few weeks, because of the simple little shift of being able to see my mind like I never have before, my life has totally changed. In the book the author teases a Volume II, which kinda pissed me off at the time (you want me to read TWO books now?), but now I can't wait to read it because of what this book has provided me to be able to reduce the inner noise that I was never able to put my finger on, but which this author explains fully, and in plain terms that are easy for me to understand. So if there's more, I wanna know.
Well done. Well written. Very relatable. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Mind Hacking Happiness Volume I The Quickest Way to Happiness and Controlling Your Mind Sean Webb 9780988809710 Books Reviews
This changed my life. When I first heard Sean's message on the body/mind/spirit it completely changed how I relate to myself and others. The material in this book will help you understand yourself and others. It opened my eyes as to why I do what I do as well as why others behave the way they do. Sean is funny, down to earth and brilliant. This is an absolute MUST READ for anyone trying to figure out their own BS.
A big yes for this outstanding book. I will be keeping it handy, with several post-its to bookmark the passages that I intend to come back to again and again. A lifetime of experience and expertise is distilled into a fun, funny, and easy to read update to your mental owner's manual. This is a book which will leave you with concrete methods to take with you in your everyday life rather than just a few moments of enthusiasm and good intentions. In that regard, it is not a 'self-help' book, it is a more a guide to understanding your limbic system's actual function and how to deprogram it for your own sake, and for the sake of everyone else.
I purchased and read both volumes - Vol. 1 ... OK this tracks normal and the advise seems very interesting and the approach seems reasonable. Then comes Vol. 2 ... starts right on track with Vol. 1 then suddenly out of no were comes the revelation of his enlightenment.
I'm sorry I really tried to digest what I would term as delusional. Yeah I know that's a very strong word but months after reading both books is the only explanation that I could come to after re-reading Vol. 2.
I don't doubt the author means well and likely really believes is what he "imagined" but that just it .... imagined.
The right balance between theory and practice is hard to find. In Mind Hacking Happiness v1, Sean has found it. Another way to put it is the balance between DESCRIPTION and PRESCRIPTION. There is just enough DESCRIPTION of our mental processes, the science behind them, and the ways they impact our lives. This level of description is a minimum effective dose to provide the logical framework to understand the PRESCRIPTION sections of the book.
Here we get the goodies. The Mind Hacks themselves. These tools are given in a clear and useful manner. I've already started to see myself using some of the language of the book to think about my own emotions using the "Equation Of Emotion". I'm looking forward to rereading parts of the book and cataloging the hacks in a cheat sheet to remind myself of the options I have.
Thanks for a well-researched gift of a book.
This is an amazing book. It explains the mind, our human emotions, and the source pain and suffering with a mix of science, stories, and ancient wisdom teachings. Then it presents practical advice on how to use that information to increase happiness in everyday life. And unlike a lot of the other stuff I've read, it actually works. I can see my mind now and control it much better. This is definitely one of the best books I've ever read for improving life by improving your mind.
Just read it. It is filled with brilliant ways to improve your life and OUR WORLD. I wish everyone could have these insights and use them. There is ancient wisdom to ponder mixed with interesting stories and practical ways from modern science to make your everyday life experience BETTER. They all make sense and many are immediately implementable. I am now 65 and I would give near anything to have had the GEMS in this book 40 years ago. I recommend reading it very carefully from the beginning all the way through without skipping ahead because you need all of the information in the order it is presented and you will benefit much more if you read it all carefully. I think it would’ve dramatically changed and improved my life years ago but it can help me now at 65 it is just a matter of absorbing the very insightful ideas and concepts. I am going to read volume two without a doubt but right now I’m reviewing and studying the ideas in volume one and trying to put them into the fabric of my every day life HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
