For some time, rumors have circulated that the lodge occupies the site of an old Indian graveyard. According to Cherokee legend, such sacrilege is bound to have unpleasant repercussions. When Thorton is found dead in the front seat of a car belonging to one of the lodge staff, the lodge's Indian employees are sure the death is the work of a night walker, a Cherokee witch.
To keep half the lodge's work force from walking out, Thornton's mother calls in an old Cherokee medicine man to drive away the night walker. Meanwhile, Mitch concentrates on the human suspects - and he has plenty of them disgruntled employees, bitter family members, a young wife trapped in an extramarital affair, a young husband bent on revenge. When a second victim is found, it becomes obvious that one of these people knew too much.
Adding to the pressure, Mitch must also handle the problems of an understaffed police department, an angry teenage daughter, and a lover who is less than satisfied with their relationship.

I'm conflicted about even writing a review. The story and writing are well above average, and it's a worthy light reading. But the presentation was rankly amateurish. No effort at all was put into formatting the piece for Kindle, resulting in one distraction after another. The same can be said for "Grandfather Medicine," another fairly good work by the same author. Both need serious editing.

ADDENDUM: The problem is primarily with Kindle for PC. Some issues persist on my stand-alone device, but the book looks and reads much better if I use it. I've notified Amazon of potential bugs.

I have this book a four because I liked the story line. It was a little slow at times with a lot of information but made up for towards and at the end. The thing that bothered was the wording of the way the wording was split throughout the book. There would be a nice flow to the story and then you would have to stop and go back because it made no sense. Still I enjoyed it and look forward to another book from author.
Mitch Bushyhead is one of my new best friends in the world of books. I have enjoyed reading his series and hope for more. He is a real person as you read with real life situational problems that you can relate to. I like the mystery part of the book and I love the setting. It is a keeper.
I really enjoy reading Jean Hager's books. I just have one question about the kindle version of the books I just purchased. has nothing to do with ms. hager's books. my question is do all the kindle books have such bad editing. there are misspelled words, punctuation is incredible character's names are misspelled, etc. it seems every book I purchased thru kindle are like this. one of the books even had the same paragraph printed one after the other. anyone else noticing this.
The plot was well thought out with a good twist to the conclusion. However I thought it suffered from lack of editing.
Run on sentences were in abundance. In spite of this, l would look forward to reading more from this author.
The book was slow and somewhat tedious due a lot to the misspelling of a lot of words. I do not know if that was the author or the editing(which should have caught and corrected it) but it did take away from the story . I would not try the author again as there are so many good ones out there now, and as one thinks, so many books, so little time.
I enjoyed this story very much. The only drawback in the story was the sudden end. It satisfied the mystery but not the character involvement. As for the actual book, it was a prime example of abysmal editing. Wrong spellings, words, punctuation, and more. It was an insult to the author and to the readers. I do look forward to the next adventure, but hope it was put in the hands of a better proofreader.
As a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, I was pleasantly surprised that Jean Hager actually knew what she was talking about. Not only were places and life styes correct, but the myths were right on also. The story concerns police chief Mitch Bushyhead's attempts to solve the murder of a wealthy resort owner. While some traditional Cherokees are sure a night walker (witch) has killed the man, Bushyhead suspects the killer is human. As the police chief wades through an all too long list of people who hated the man, a second murder occurs, revealing all sorts of secrets, lies, and depravities.

A good, quick read, with just the right touch of traditional Cherokee beliefs added to the murder plot.
