This is one I'm sure you will enjoy. Crime, suspense, nature all wrapped up in a gripping story. Plenty of action.
These books get better as they go along. This particular novel starts slow and steadily builds into a whirlwind of action as the plot moves along. I like the way the author builds the characters back story.
this whole series is quite entertaining mainly because of the areas the people are in and the unusual cases that we would not normally read or even care about. Plus there has been good development of the various members of the team as well as the main characters strengths and flaws.
Author Kirk Russell has done a thorough job researching the topics in this three-book series. He uses a unique approach for getting the reader inside John Marquez's head. I sometimes found myself wanting a smoother description of the main character's thoughts and actions--not so "run-on" and simplistic. But at other times, as a fellow writer, I could see how effective it was in "showing" (key word here) how Marquez was thinking. He is a tight-lipped tough guy with an good heart and an ability to listen to and understand the feelings of others. That's what kept me reading the books--the complexity of the main character. The plots were a bit twisted at times and the low lifes populating the poaching world were a turn-off, but the books were interesting. Worth the read if you enjoy something off-the-norm in crime novels.
If you have any concerns about endangered species, then the John Marquez series is going to be able to satisfy your needs. They are not happy but they are informative.
Being raised in the Calif. Bay Area and having enjoyed years of running my boats on the bay and delta waters I really liked the accurate details the author used in describing scenes in this story. Well, with the exception of being accurate about the miserable traffic conditions of course, after all he had to keep the story moving. Using the Fish and Game undercover unit as the basis for the crimes unfolding and tying the FBI into the investigation was an enjoyable twist to the standard crime mystery. I am are the bad guy that got away will appear in future stories and I am anxious to see what happens next. Good characters, unique story line, and well paced, I enjoyed it.
Kind of slow-moving. I never knew about the problem with sturgeon poaching. Of course, that's one of the goals of this book teach about ecological situations. I like John Marquez though from a distance...he's too much of a loner for me. I'm not sure how/why he's married. His wife and stepdaughter are believable. I like that he always calls for backup -- not a loner when working, like some other detective novel main characters.
